Hark 2 (2006)

Hark 2 is a collaborative audio-visual installation. The sound element is based on field recordings made by David Chapman in and around Gunpowder Park, near Waltham Abbey, during its transformation from abandoned munitions testing site to reclaimed and managed parkland. These recordings are processed and arranged into a multi-channel sound composition.

The visual element, produced by natural history photographer David Cottridge, explores the texture, colour and form of tree bark, lichens and mosses through a series of macroscopic photographs recorded on the same site. These images are digitally animated and projected and act as a ‘graphic score’ for the sound piece.

The work is a result of a durational engagement with the site, which marks and responds to seasonal shifts, such as weather patterns, migratory movements and breeding behaviours.  This work builds on Hark, an earlier collaboration, which was exhibited at the Gunpowder Park Field Station in November 2005.
